Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile infection – enterocolitis

Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a, anaerobic, Gram-positive, spore-forming, toxin-producing bacillus, (renamed Clostridioides difficile in 2016) was first isolated in 1935 from the fecal flora of healthy neonates, but its importance has spiked since the appearance of more virulent strains in the last decades and the more widespread use of antibiotics which can increase the risk of colonisation and infection.
